Abstract

It is known that the aqueous tears film over the corneal eye surface has the function to maintain the corneal surface moist and lubricated. It is also known that any alteration of moisture from the eye surface can result in discomfort and can cause in the worst cases damages to the corneal surface itself. The tears film can be damaged due to a long and persistent use of the eyes, or reduced blink frequency due to focus and attention on what is done. This is especially true for people working on PC (especially if with CRT videos), watching a lot of TV, playing a lot with videogames, driving with attention for a long time (for ex. during the night or with the fog). There are drop solution that can alleviate this problem, but there is no mechanism that automatically warns the user based on the real state of his tears film. There are solutions that are only based on external factors (like blink frequency counter, or air humidity evaluation)

Hereafter is proposed a method based on a small light (a little led), included in the glasses frame,

                                        (in the peripheral part so that it does not impact the vision). This beam can be in the spectrum of the lights that is not visible by the eye (not UV of course that can be dangerous). As shown in figure 1, a sensor detects the reflected beam light and based on the detected intensity (reduction due to the refraction) it can approximately evaluate the amount of the tears film.

There is an apparatus that is used for medical exams that basically works

with the same basic principle

                    . But it is included in a big medical diagnostic apparatus, It is used to scan the whole eye, cell by cell, and to produce and store a map of the eye areas, detecting the dryness areas identified with different colors in the produced report. It is not portable and does not warn the user in all specific day moments.

    In the figure 1 it is shown the section of the glass frame, the eye and of the beam ray source with the related photo detector.

    Some consecutive samples from the detector can be taken to see the trend and if the trend is negative some actions can be taken.

    Based of the retrieved and evaluated information the system can warn the user of the dangerous situation ("take a break", use "drops"...) or if the situation is not problematic it can fo...
