Abstract

Results from an online query are dependent on the search engine’s algorithm for gathering information. To gain results more relevant to the actual query, Linux (running on a search engine’s server) gathers the query text, the search engine’s results, and the subsequent click-throughs by users of the search engine. Linux then uses this information to build its own Web-based database, aggregating these results into a hierarchical structure. Linux compiles these results from all search engines that run the Linux operating system. Linux stores this database of results in a cloud computing database platform. During subsequent queries, a search engine compiles results from the Linux hierarchical database with its own results, then passes these compiled results back to the user. Users can also directly search this Linux hierarchical database.

Problem or Opportunity

A user creates a file structure and hierarchy on their own computer, using a method that works for them so that the user can retrieve information expeditiously. While it might not be the perfect hierarchy for storing information, it is the best for that particular user simply due to the fact that they created it using their preferred way for finding files. This hierarchy might not work for another user who has a different preferential way for finding files. In addition, personal computer hard drives are only so large, thus limiting the amount of information that can be stored on them.

Online, of course, the hierarchical structure is created by others so users must adapt their preferential search methods to suit. Actually, since there isn’t any one hierarchical structure for online content, at some point, every user has to search for content using a method that is not their preference. In addition, online servers have capacities for storing enormous amounts information, and the number of servers worldwide is equally as enormous. Essentially, the amount of information available through the Internet is exhaustive and seemingly limitless.

Finding something is an increasingly onerous task. The results of search engines provide some help in locating information, but it is far from perfect. The method of displaying the results from a query through a particular search engine changes frequently, and is based on a number of factors that a user doesn’t care about. Most results from a user search are based on the content of various web sites and not specifically on what the user is looking for.
