Abstract

This article describes a method of determining whether the owners of 2 or more devices (eg PCs, laptops, mobile phones, etc.) are talking to each other. Once it is determined that the owners are talking to each other, the devices can collaborate, either automatically if desired, or after confirmation from each user. This would enable very easy swapping of business cards, or other machine to machine collaboration.

Often, proximity of one device (for example mobile phones, PDA's, laptops) with another is taken as an indication that the owners of the devices are collaborating. By proximity we mean the fact that two (or more) devices are within range of each other's wireless signal. However, even with short range devices, it cannot be guaranteed that the owners of the devices are actually collaborating - they might just be in the same room, or even different sides of a thin wall.

    The system herein uses a device's microphone to determine whether its owner is having a conversation with another device's owner. Once the system can be sure of a relationship, it can allow the devices to collaborate. Being able to more accurately pinpoint that collaboration between the owners of the devices is taking place could be very useful.

    The system herein works by switching on the microphone on two (or more) devices which are in range of each other. If two people were having a conversation, Microphone A would pick up the sound of Person A talking, loud and clear, whilst at the same time, Microphone B would pick up the sound of Person A talking at a lower level. In natural conversation, this would be followed by Microphone A picking up the sound of Person B talking quite quietly, whilst Microphone B would pick up Person B loud and clear.
