Abstract

Company-proprietary information, especially confidential information is very vital for a company to continue its daily business and outstand in the industry. Softcopy confidential info can be easily protected by various password in computer. If the confidential info is printed or copied to hardcopy, it is also very important to well protect them. So we try to find an easy and efficient way to figure out pages with confidential info from dozens of files. This paper provides a method and apparatus based on current printer and copymachine for hardcopy confidential document tagging and detection.

Company-proprietary information, especially confidential information is very vital for a company to continue its daily business and outstand in the industry. So confidential information protection is always emphasized in security control. Softcopy confidential info can be easily protected by various password in computer. If the confidential info is printed or copied to hardcopy, it is also very important to well protect them.

The difficulty of hardcopy confidential info protection lies in:
- The hardcopy of confidential info may be mixed in a heap of files and left on desk in non-

hour.


- It is time-consuming or even difficult to distinguish hardcopy of confidential info from the others.
- Furthermore, some employees may be afraid to mark "confidential" on document even they should be classified, because they worry about security violation.

One of current solutions is "clean-desk",

which requires employees to keep their desk clean and lock

working-hour. But it can not be well

complied with due to various reasons. For example, employee may miss one page of confidential info in fifty non-confidential pages.

Another solution is to leverage security guard to stroll round and check dozens of files on employees' desks. It is time-consuming to thumb through dozens of pages. Even more, they may not have sufficient knowledge to figure out confidential info.

So we need an easy and efficient way to figure out pages with confidential info from dozens of files.

This paper provides a method and apparatus for hardcopy confidential document tagging and detection. It works as below:
1. Tag hardcopy confidential document:
1.1. For printer:
(1) When users print, they will get a prompt whether need Confidential-Tagging.
(2) When the printer receivers content for print, it check Confidential-Tagging. If user does not choose Confidential-Tagging, the printer scans the content in its buffer and check whether it is confidential info.
