Abstract

This describes a method and apparatus for delivering multiple enhanced therapies in one catheter/stent system by incorporating vessel occlusion and cooling features. The catheter includes a balloon-stent delivery platform that includes a plurality of balloons: soft blood flow occlusion balloons that will rapidly restrict and release blood flow without damaging the vessel, a cryotherapy balloon that allows continuous controlled cooling with a liquid refrigerant (nitrous oxide), and a stent delivery balloon to deploy the stent. In different embodiments the balloons can be combined. The balloons can also be designed in a helical shape or with multiple internal lumen(s) deployment to allow continuous cooling during a sequence of intermittent ischemia conditioning. The multiple lumens can be inflated to occlude a portion of the circumferential surface of the vessel, at a time, thus allowing blood flow through the un-occluded regions of the vessel, while cooling vessel regions that are in contact with the inflated lumen.
