Today when InstallShield code changes or installed related DLLs or EXEs must change, but the product deliverables do not change , an entire new CD must be built to obtain the new install related code. If the product deliverables are not available they must also be rebuilt. This rebuilding can cause changes to be incorporated because the exact product deliverables must be recreated . The recreation can introduce changes, because of compiler changes, etc. Many times during the ***IBM ***Tivoli Monitoring System life cycle, the install code was found in error and older CDs were not updated because of the expense to recreate the product deliverables on the older CDs . So these install errors existed in the CDs even though a fix was available . Also, even though a fix was available there was no way to just apply the fix to the CD and leave the CD intact with only the change implemented.

The core idea is to allow for replacement of these install related pieces without rebuilding the entire CD. When this method is in place CDs can be updated and shipped to customers with confidence that ONLY the fix was sent and no other code effected. CDs could be updated multiple times a...
