Abstract

The proposed tool provides a fast but comprehensive insight into the key environmental and economical aspects of data centers and allows executives to make faster and better decisions on cost saving potentials, business continuity and long-term IT strategies. The tool enables to run different dynamic scenarios which include simulating various business risks and visualizing the impact of green solutions on energy efficiency, Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), and business continuity.

THE ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES

At present, long established and to date successful business

                                       models are challenged by the global crisis to their very foundations. Next to the predominant financial crisis companies have to master concerns about rising energy demands, escalating electricity prices and greenhouse gas emissions which are limiting business growth. One of the affected business areas is information technology (IT) and IT service providers. So far they were focused on meeting the rapidly increasing computing demand. For this, new high performance and high density IT equipment was deployed, doubling the energy consumption of data centers from 2000 to 2005 (Koomey, 2007). This development is accompanied by new urgent concerns: Rising energy consumption and electricity costs

will make operating expenses exceed server capital expenses by

2009 (Brill, 2006).

Power and cooling limits were stated to be reached at 50% of the world's data centers by the end of 2008 (Kumar, 2006). Governments, in particular in the EU and the US, are working on new legislation for environmental protection, affecting IT products and operations that cause emissions of CO2 or other greenhouse gases (Mines, 2007). Furthermore, because of the prominence of global warming concerns, green IT is becoming part of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for any company.

IT Management is challenged to develop a green IT strategy to minimize those risks to become more energy efficient, and to maintain acceptable operating and investment costs to ensure the company's growth.

THE CHALLENGE OF FINDING THE RIGHT GREEN IT STRATEGY

Finding the right mix of solutions for a green IT strategy will be crucial to successfully eliminate occurring energy related issues, minimize upcoming risks and become environmentally responsible, all in consideration of the return on investment (ROI). Nevertheless there is no perfect strategy to create a green data center due to the diversity of design and requirements of data centers. In order to determine the most effective strategy it is necessary for executives to develop a holistic view. They have to look not only on energy related issues from a technical standpoint but also assess the situation at an economic level and with a long term perspective.

A holistic approach will

help to unveil the fact that some green solutions only help to reduce the carbon footprint but will not result in a data center using less energy. Where to start with solving problems,

where to set priorities on greens solutions and how to meet the right level of
