Abstract

Many times when sending email to a recipient, the sender would like to include the recipient’s manager in the email. Additionally, sometimes the sender would like to send an email to a recipient and include the recipient’s backup person as well. There is known art in adding groups to an email as well as art in locating one's manager in a directory, yet the known art requires the email sender to manually locate the manager (or multiple managers should the email contain multiple persons) and adding these entities to the addressee fields of the email. This is a laborious process as well as error prone (e.g. missed a manager). What is needed is a method by which the email sender can click a box to "include managers" or "include backups" and have the email program auto populate the email recipient list with the appropriate email addresses from the sender’s email address book.

System and method of auto populating email messages to recipients ' LDAP generated and related groups

Many times when sending email to a recipient, the sender would like to include the recipient's manager in the email. Additionally, sometimes the sender would like to send an email to a recipient and include the recipient's backup person as well. There is known art in adding groups to an email as well as art in locating one's manager in a directory, yet the known art requires the email sender to manually locate the manager (or multiple managers, should the email contain multiple persons) and adding these entities to the addressee fields of the email. This is a laborious process as well as prone to error (e.g. missed a manager). What is needed is a method by which the email sender can click a box to "include managers" or "include backups" and have the email program auto populate the email recipient list with the appropriate email addresses from the sender's email address book.

According to this disclosure the email sender is presented with additional "checkboxes" for the three target recipients discussed above. These "checkboxes" as depicted in figure 1 below are straightforward to add to existing email clients, such as Lotus Notes. When the email user clicks one of these checkboxes, the proposed program will query the associated directory (e.g. LDAP {Lightweight Directory Access Protocol}/Domino NAB {IBM® Lotus® Domino® Name and Address Book database}) to locate the appropriate parties per the request of the email user. These located parties will then be added to the email.
