Background

Conventional cryogenic ablation balloons are configured for ablation, but are not configured for mapping the heart’s electrical signals.  It would be beneficial for a cryogenic ablation balloon (hereinafter “cryo balloon”) to have mapping capabilities.

Solution

According to the present invention, lines of electrically conductive material within the cryo balloon material serve as mapping electrodes.  Such lines of electrically conductive material may be formed by loading the base material (e.g., by doping) from which the cryo balloon is formed.  For example, as shown in Figs. 1A and 1B, a cryo balloon catheter 10 may be formed (e.g., by extruding) from a base material 12 that is loaded with conductive material 14 in a striped configuration.  The resulting cry balloon 16 is depicted in an expanded configuration in Fig. 1C.  The conductive stripes 14 in the balloon 16 may be coupled to wires 18, shown in Fig. 1C, that extend the length of the catheter 10 for transmitting signals from the conductive stripes 14 to the proximal end of the catheter 10.

                 

       

   

Using the balloon 16 to map signals at pulmonary vein ostiums, for example, may give noisy signals due to the length of the effective electrode 14.  Thus, it may be desirable to coat portions of the balloon 16 with insulative material so that only selected portions of the electrodes 14 are exposed.  In one exemplary embodiment, shown in Fig. 2A, distal and proximal sections 22 and 24 of the balloon 16 are c...
