Abstract

One of the security policies is to secure the laptop to the desk avoiding possible thefts. Normally this is guaranteed by a security cable but the user often forgets to use it. For instance, the user inserts the laptop into the docking station but forgets to lock the laptop with the security cable. The solution is to alert the laptop user with a sound and/or a led when the security cable is not used. This solution is not a new locking mechanism, but it improves a pre-existing one. It improves the consumability of the security cable assuring a global better security. Additional solution is required because currently there is no way for the laptop user to be alerted if the security cable is not locking the laptop.

An alarm for use of security cables

A system is here described for securing the use of a security cable locking a portable computer to a docking station when it is inserted.

The system can be described as follows:
1) a security cable lock that is commonly employed with a notebook computer to assure the portable device through the docking station
2) a docking station which has a circuit with two switches, and a chip containing a device driver for the security cable.

When the laptop is inserted into the docking station and the security cable is not inserted:
a) Switch 1 is on, switch 2 is off, the led indicator (or lamp) turns on and the device driver is loaded on the laptop.
b) An alarm software runs on the laptop and executes a query against the device driver to detect if the security cable is inserted or not. This mechanism is similar to the USB (Universal SerialBus) storage pen drives for which the operating system is able to detect the new device.
c) The alarm software can be customized from the user to choose the alarm type.
d) In this condition (security cable not inserted) the alarm software, according to the user customization, displays a warning popup, and/or sends a mail to IT administrator, and/or sends a SMS to the user. When the security cable is inserted:
Switch 2 opens the circuit and the light is turned off.
