Abstract

A method and apparatus for mandating use of voice commands for mobile devices based upon known movement of a user is disclosed. The mobile device alerts the user to use only voice commands if the user attempts to push any button on the mobile device when the rate of speed of the user exceeds a predefined threshold.

Method of Mandating Use of Voice Commands for Mobile Devices Based Upon Known Movement

Disclosed is a method and apparatus for mandating use of voice commands for mobile devices based upon known movement of a user. Mobile devices, such as a mobile phone, PDA, etc., are often used in situations that may be detrimental for the safety of the user and for the safety of others around the user. For example, use of mobile devices while driving a car, a train, an airplane, etc. would be hazardous to the safety of the user and others around the user. In such hazardous situations if the rate of speed of the user is detected to exceed a predefined threshold the mobile device alerts the user to use only voice commands when the user attempts to push any button on the mobile device.

The rate of speed of the user is determined using Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. Based on movement of the mobile device, GPS quadrants change to new latitudes and new longitudes. The rate of speed of the user is determined based on the changes in latitudes and longitudes of the GPS quadrants with respect to time. In an instance, the predefined threshold for a user can be set such that the predefined threshold is more than a normal walking speed associated with the user.

The mobile device alerts the user to use only voice commands to access the mobile device if the rate of speed of the user exceeds a predefined threshold. The user is alerted when...
