Antibacterial Coating on Business Machines

This idea describes a multifunction printer (MFP) control panel incorporating an antimicrobial (antibacterial and antifungal) component in the plastic. An example antimicrobial component is made by Microban® and can be incorporated into plastics and other materials. Microban® claims this component destroys harmful bacteria and slows staining and mildew growth, making the product appear cleaner.

The claim is that incorporation of antimicrobial material into MFPs will be a selling feature and will improve the appearance of the product. Using this technology on Control panels will give the machines an extra selling feature. The MFP machines are constantly used by different users, and having an antimicrobial protection engineered into the plastics will help prevent the spread of harmful bacteria. The users will feel safer using our machines and more specifically using the control panel.

MFP’s have a long product life cycle, and will quickly harbor bacteria and fungus. Multiple users will be in contact with this and after a few years will see dust and grime on the surface of the machine (similar to office phones and keyboards) preventing the user from using the machine longer than necessary. Research shows that the office phone or keyboard can harbor more harmful microbes than a toilet bowl, and many office workers are aware of this.
