Disclosed is a method that combines visual recognition, speech recognition, global positioning system (GPS) and potentially, bluetooth technology to enter or match an Information Technology (IT) asset into a central repository. The repository can then be used by a product, like IBM Tivoli Asset Management for IT to manage the asset throughout its life cycle.

Currently, data about assets is automatically collected via discovery software that is distributed via the network or installed manually. The discovery agent is installed on a computer and scans the computer for information, like hostname, number of processors, available free physical disk space, software installed,
printers, monitors installed, etc. This data is then sent back to the
managing application repository.
Drawbacks to this solution include the assumption that a software agent can be installed (or is connected to a computer that can detect its presence), it is up and running and it is connected to a network that has network continuity to the managing application.
The method disclosed proposes using a visual/audio apparatus that has the capability to visually recognize objects and text and take audio and location information (GPS) as input for the
purpose of gathering data about an asset or matching it to an existing asset in a database
1. The visual input will pick up characteristics like size, color, hostname labels on assets, and serial numbers.
2. The audio input can specify owner, whether the asset is already recorded in the database and any other input to aid the matching of assets that are not visually recognizable.
