Method and System for Displaying Markers in Instant Messaging System

Disclosed is a method and system for displaying markers in an Instant Messaging (IM) system based on a conversation in an ongoing chat session. The method involves tracking text being typed by a user and other participants in the ongoing chat session. In order to track the text, an agent is utilized which runs in the background of the ongoing chat session. The agent continuously tracks keywords and phrases of the on-going chat session and checks if a corresponding marker is present in a database. The database maintains a repository of markers which are utilized by a user. If the agent identifies a keyword for which a marker is available, the agent displays the marker associated with the keyword in a marker display section. Further, the agent may check if any dependent markers are available in the database, corresponding to the marker. These dependent markers are also displayed in the marker display section. The marker display section may be placed within the IM window of the ongoing chat session. Fig. 1 shows an IM window with a marker display section.

In a scenario, a user may specify the sensitivity with which the agent selects and displays markers. The sensitivity may be specified through user specified static rules or a percentage of relevance algorithm for selecting and displaying the markers. For example, if the keyword "project" regularly displays a marker that included links for an obsolete first project of the user, the user may establish a static rule, where matches that include the word "project" must include a second keyword within one word of

"project," such as the name of the project as the second keyword.

The method may further involve utilizing a pre-fetch element for populating the markers in the marker display section. For example, markers may be pre-populated based on previous conversations with the individuals. Markers may also be pre-fetched based on a last known conversation. For example, if markers are used during a convers...
