Abstract

A data entry methodology is defined. The data entry method is to mark the fields that need updating after a field copy, or a copying of group of fields such as a row or column copy. Preferably, the fields are visually marked to be noticeable by persons that are requiring those fields receive a value update. This method reduces the oversights in missing fields that require updating.

Method for Demanding Focus for Reducing Spreadsheet Data Entry Omissions

Spreadsheets provide a simple means of maintaining and updating information for documenting and communicating with other members in the group. As is often the practice, a row or a collection of rows in a spreadsheet is/are copied from existing row(s) and within the row some of the fields need to be updated, while many of the fields do not require editing. As is the typical case, entering hundreds of fields, one or several get overlooked, and these omissions result in confusion and project delays and expense. A method of data entry to easily define and mark the fields that need updating after a row copy would go a long way to reducing the oversights.

Here is a row in a spreadsheet, simplified for illustration:

here is what the copy row is intended to be: S

g

_pll_m8_iap_sem_vio_hv4

S

y

stem - HV8 and IH NEST A-NE 14 opc

g

_pll_m8_iap_sem_vio_h8_ih

here is what could be erroneously entered and sent to the project causing confusion and delay: S

g

_pll_m8_iap_sem_vio_hv4

S

The core idea is to Visually Demand via a color choice or other visually graphic method (or other attention getting method) the entry on the fields that need to be updated:

g

_pll_m8_iap_sem_vio_hv4

S

g

Once the visually adorned fields are clicked upon, the colors revert back to original, or the attention getting device is disabled.

In this case, some of the fields have been updated, but one of the fields did not get updated.
