A solid-state drive (SSD) is a data storage device that uses solid-state memory to store persistent data. SSDs are external storage devices designed on the basis of semiconductor memory. The biggest advantage of a SSD is that it does not use any mechanical moving parts. This property of a SSD gives it a huge advantage over a HDD (Hard Disk Drive):
The access time of the SSD is almost 250 times faster than that of an HDD.
The read speed of an SSD is higher than that of the HDD.
Since the SSD does not contain any mechanical parts, it is more resilient.
Also unlike the HDD, an SSD makes no noise during its operation.
It is lighter in weight as compared to a HDD.
The power consumption of a SSD is also low - enabling a Green internet technology status/
Current databases (e.g.email servers) do not utilize the advantages of the "underlying disk technology" while rebalancing/organizing data. There is a strong need for databases to do so to derive the much needed growth in performance and to meet the challenges of being greener. Where the database is configured to reside on a storage consisting of a hybrid array of disks (a mix of HDD & SSD), current servers are not designed to optimally store/rebalancing/organizing data with accounting for the underlying disk technology in order to attain its benefits. In another manifestation a domino database running over HDDs has a new SSD disk configured for usage. In such case the data should be rebalanced such that high importance emails/documents or most frequently accessed documents/emails should be redistributed /rebalanced and placed on the SSD, as it has a faster read performance.
