Abstract

A user can work with the data in a multidimensional report through a series of gestures that refine the data. Each of these gestures applies a dimensional style operation to the set of data being acted on. After these operations have been applied to the data, the user requires a method to understand how the data being presented has been defined. Solutions that exist today for this method will typically display a textual definition of the operations, usually in the form of a multidimensional expression (e.g. MDX).

Visualization of dimensional operations in a report

Disclosed is a process for enabling visualization of dimensional operations in a report. The disclosed process enables presentation of the data definition in a graphical form. Using the disclosed process enables a user to better relate to the presentation of the definition because the

p

resentation more closely represents the sequence of gestures the user applied to achieve the definition.

A user is able to work with data in a multi-dimensional report through a series of gestures used to refine the data. Each of these gestures applies a dimensional style operation to the set of data being acted upon. After application of the operations to the data, the user requires a method to understand how the data being presented has been defined. Solutions that exist today for this method typically display a textual definition of the operations, usually in the form of a multi-dimensional expression (MDX).

For example, in the following figure a series of dimensional operations have been performed on some financial data resulting in a revenue report for a selection of sales territories. The dimensional operations are graphically represented in the dialog box labeled Set Definition in the center of the figure. Dimensional operations successively applied to the data are presented from right to left, beginning with a country selection, within the dialog box. Rather than a textual representation listing each dimensional operation...
