Described is an idea that introduces a novel way to categorize incoming Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) messages. It avoids the network latency issues introduced by filtering and analyzing incoming data packets. It also takes advantage of simple administrative functions that most IP PBX servers provide today. It gives the users of the VoIP system the ability to categorize calls in an individual fashion without much intervention needed from the system administrator. The idea takes a novel approach to categorizing incoming VoIP messages by generating a unique VoIP phone number extension that can be requested by the user and generated dynamically by the IP PBX for the user. The new extension number is unique and is owned by the requesting user. The extension can be used for a specific purpose determined by the user and, therefore, can be used for categorization of incoming messages.

    The ability to categorize incoming and outgoing electronic communications is an important function most businesses require. Well-known categorizing techniques include organizing incoming messages by sender, in VoIP using an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) to route the caller to a number, or manually creating separate accounts for sending and receiving different categories of communication.

    Categorization is the process in which data is recognized, differentiated, and understood. A form of categorizing is filtering, which attempts to remove unwanted communications while keeping the others. Filtering is commonly used to block electronic spam. Most messaging systems have to deal with the unsolicited distribution of bulk messages and many techniques are employed. Specifically, VoIP technologies are increasingly having to deal with the proliferation of unwanted automatically-dialed, prerecorded phone calls. VoIP spam is commonly referred to as Spam over Internet Telephony (SPIT). VoIP is a general term for a family of transmission technologies for delivery of voice communications over IP networks such as the Internet or other packet-switched networks. Other terms frequently encountered and synonymous with VoIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, voice over broadband (VoBB), broadband telephony, and broadband phone.

    VoIP users are also limited in their options for sub-categorizing incoming messages they receive. For example, in a typical business, users are allocated a single, well-known VoIP extension and a single corresponding voice-mail account. In general, to categorize incoming messages the user has the option of checking the caller-id or managing the messages through their single voice-mail account. Let's say a user wants all incoming messages from a certain client to be prioritized and, therefore, made easy to access. Incoming messages are all routed to this single VoIP extension, and voice-mail is stored alongside all the other voice-mail the user receives.
