Disclosed is a method and system for intelligently collecting data for validation of the occurrence of an error in data. Validating collected data is very critical in making the right policy decision. The disclosed method and system is a novel way of improving the quality and reliability of autonomic policy execution through intelligent data validation. The method and system employs a data structure to represent the rules / metadata for data validation and uses a context-specific data integrity checking algorithm which ensures that the policy decision taken is more accurate and consistent. Further, the method and system includes dynamically determining additional data to be collected which resolves any issues in policy decision making and results in efficient operation of the system.

Usually, in an autonomic environment, data is collected using sensors and logs. Further, there may be a pre-defined action associated with the data collected. In a scenario, the data collected may be erroneous and misleading due to failure of devices or due to non-calibration of measurements. In case the data collected is erroneous, performing the pre-defined action associated with the data may lead to a wrong response. Therefore, there is a need for validation of occurrence of an error in the data collected.

The method and system disclosed intelligently collects the data for validation of the occurrence of error in the data. The method includes determining whether validation rules are specified for the data. In case the validation rules are not specified for the data, validation of the data is not performed. In a scenario, if the validation rules are specified for the data, the validation is performed based on the valid range values of the data specified in the validation rule. In another scenario, if the validation rule specifies that additional data is needed, the additional data is identified based on the validation rules. The additional data is identified for corroborating the occurrence of the error in the data. Further, the additional data is identified by searching a policy catalog based on the type of data. The additional data is collected with relevance to the context for validation of the occurrence of the error in the data.
