Method and System for Detecting a Torn Bill

Disclosed is a method and system for detecting a torn bill in a self checkout system. The method involves blowing air on one side of a bill inserted in the self checkout system for detecting the torn bill. In addition, the method utilizes an image scanner provided in the self checkout system for detecting the torn bill.

In an embodiment, when a user inserts a bill in a self checkout system, the self checkout system holds the bill at two positions using rollers as illustrated in Fig. 1.

Figure 1

The rollers hold the bill in a direction along the length of the bill. As shown in Fig. 1, air is blown towards one side of the bill while avoiding the flow of air on edges of the bill. Further, an air flow detector is present at opposite side of the bill in order to detect the air flow. In case the air flow is detected on the opposite side of the bill, the bill is detected as torn. However, points of contact of the rollers with the bills remain unchecked. In order to check the undetected areas of the bill, the bill is moved towards a scanner present in the self checkout system. In case the bill detected is not torn, the bill is accepted and moved towards a bill recycling system. However, if the bill is detected as torn, the bill is moved towards a bill collecting system.

In another embodiment, upon inserting a bill in a self checkout system, the self checkout system holds the bill at two positions along the length of the bill as...
