Disclosed is a method and system for providing data type naming convention for Intelligent Storage Service Catalog (ISSC). The method and system involves providing a convention for naming data types, wherein the convention is utilized in ISSC engagements. The method involves standardizing naming of the data type by using specific groupings of characters to relay information about the data type.

An example of a data type is depicted in Fig. 1.

The method involves maintaining one or more look-up tables which are utilized for building the data type name. For example, for the data type depicted in Fig. 1, sample lookup tables for Application Type Code, Data Type Code, Data State Code, and Compliance Code may be maintained as shown in Fig. 2a, Fig. 2b and Fig. 2c.

Upon preparing the look-up tables, a data type name is associated to business requirements, correct provisioning size, services, technologies and policies for future storage provisions. Accordingly, naming is provided for the data type based on the

convention in the look-up tables. For example, one or more applications consisting of

data types are depicted in Fig. 3a and Fig. 3b.
