Disclosed is an invention for a smart appliance engine that automatically generates a shopping or grocery list based on analyzing and interpreting informal conversations through semantic processing. The intelligent listening device uses a parser to identify key words or phrases as they are spoken either directly or indirectly to the device. Identified words build the shopping list.

Individuals are often frustrated and disappointed when they discover that they are missing one or two critical ingredients for a recipe; they forgot to purchase them the last time they went to the store.

To combat this situation, "smart appliances', such as refrigerators, have a small computer in them which enable the generation of a grocery list. They connect with the supermarket and order the grocery list. These smart refrigerators require that the user speak into them or input a written list. This demands concentrated, manual efforts, and users would benefit from a more automated system.

The disclosed solution automatically generates a grocery-like list by listening to conversations and performing semantic analysis on them. These conversations could be recorded and encrypted via a microphone built into the appliance, such as a refrigerator.
