Migrating from Preview Mode to Native Format of the Document

A method and system is disclosed for retaining display of a part-of-interest in a document while migrating from preview mode format to native format of the document.

In accordance with the method and system, while indexing documents on the Internet, a web application transforms a document page-by-page or slide-by-slide or sheet-by-sheet from a native format of the document to the HTML format. The web application merges pages transformed in the HTML format into one master page. In addition to merging the pages, the web application also injects location information for each page/slide/sheet in the document. In an embodiment, the location information can be inserted as HTML code SPAN or DIV. In another embodiment, a simplified heuristic can be used to identify the various sections of the document. Accordingly, the web application stores the HTML version of the document and discards the native format of the document.

Thereafter, once a user searches documents using a set of search terms. One or more documents relevant to the search terms are displayed to the user. The user may wish to preview a document before accessing the document in its entirety. Accordingly, a preview of the HTML version of document is shown to the user.
