DETAILED DESCRIPTION

    Due to increased renewable energy generation, utilities are facing a phenomenon of negative energy prices. One simple way to cope with excess energy production is to curtail renewable energy sources.

    Power curtailment functionality is a standard part of a modern wind turbine design. Power curtailment is used under grid critical conditions. A drawback of standard power curtailment is that standard power curtailment operation results in a financial loss for the wind turbine power plant owner. During curtailed operation, energy is being generated from the wind energy plant but is not being used by and charged to the user.

    Therefore, there exists a need in the art for a technique that monitors and controls energy production in a wind energy plant in a more efficient manner.

    This invention generally relates to an electric energy meter that provides detailed reports of the potential power generation and the actual power generation from a renewable energy plant. The energy meter may be used at the individual wind turbine level, the wind plant level, or a solar plant level, for example.
