Abstract

Standard user interfaces with keypads have some disadvantages like limited robustness against environmental conditions, complex mechanics with moving parts, difficulties in achieving high IP (Internet Protocol) rating, and they are expensive. Up to now, there are different technologies for keypads known. An interesting solution is to avoid conventional keypads completely and to use a touch panel without any additional keys. The advantage is that high IP rating and high robustness against dirt and aggressive chemicals can be easily guaranteed, as the complete surface consists of glass. The disadvantage is that for machine tool applications a huge number of keys are required, which consume a lot of space of the touch panel resulting in a huge screen size and also in high costs. On the other hand the reaction time of touch panels is slower compared to standard keypads, which is in most machine tool applications essential.
