Abstract

An adiabatic compressed air storage system is disclosed. Ambient air is compressed by a motor driven compressor. The heat produced in the compression is stored in thermal energy storage. The cooled compressed air is sent to a cavern. When discharging the cavern the compressed air is heated by the heat stored in the thermal energy storage and is then expanded through a turbine which drives a generator. Further, concentrated solar heat is fed to the thermal energy storage to allow for extended hours of operation.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

    Generally, a small number of diabatic compressed air energy plants are used to drive generators. Compressed air energy storage is a way to store energy generated at one time for use at another time. Diabatic storage dissipates the extra heat with intercoolers into the atmosphere as waste. Upon removal from storage the air is re-heated prior to expansion in the turbine to power a generator. A natural gas fired burner for utility grade storage or with a heated metal mass for a large uninterruptible power supply.

    However, these diabatic compressed air energy plants do not store the compression heat. Therefore fuel is burnt during the discharging phase which leads to an overall efficiency of 40%-54%.

    Therefore, there exists a need in the art for an improved adiabatic system that is energy efficient.

    Together with the growing number of renewable energy sources installed, the demand for efficient storage is growing. An adiabatic system with thermal energy storage is disclosed. Figure 1 is a schematic representation of the adiabatic system disclosed herein.
