Method and System for Enabling a User to Access a Server through an Instant

Messaging Client while Involved in a Chat Session

A method and system is disclosed for enabling a user to access a server through an instant messaging client while involved in a chat session.

In an embodiment, a server command line interface, such as SSH is included within instant messaging clients. The command line interface is included by means of a plugin or extension to an existing messaging application. The plugin have necessary software components to allow communication according to the SSH standards.

Consider the following exemplary conversation illustrating how a server is accessed through an instant messaging client during a chat conversation.

User 1: Do you know what killed the application?

User 2: I'd have to check the log in the server. Hold on… (User 2 changes client mode

)

% ssh server.bm.com % login:
%

passwor

d:

/home

/

     user2 % cat app.log NullPointerException
User1: (User 1 changes client mode

)

I see it now, thanks.

By enabling an instant message client, with included SSH client, as a modal application, the method and system disclosed herein allows users in the chat session to interact directly with the server without having to startup a server interface application.
