Disclosed is a method and system for alerting/notifying a user to utilize one or more gift cards based on preference specified by the user.

In accordance with the method and system disclosed herein, a smart phone/personal digital assistant (PDA) of a user is provided with an application that processes a gift card. While processing the gift card, the application retrieves relevant information such as product information, merchant information and expiry date of the gift card. Accordingly, the application notifies/alerts the user if the gift card is nearing expiration or if the user is in proximity to a merchant where the gift card can be used. In an embodiment, the user may be alerted/notified based on user preferences such an expiration based alert and/or location based alerts. For example, a user may specify the application to alert the user within 10 days of expiration. Further user may also specify the application to alert the user when the user is within 500 ft of a merchant where the gift card can be used.

Fig. 1 illustrates a logical architecture of a card reminder application stored in a smart phone/PDA of a user in accordance with the system disclosed herein.

In an embodiment, a gift card data is processed by reading bar code information from the gift card. The bar code information may be read by scanning a photo image of the gift card and detecting relevant information (merchant/issuer, expiration). In order to

detect relevant information, existing object character recognition (OCR) and image-processing technology could be used. Additionally, relevant information may be retrieved from a merchant-specific web service.
