Disclosed is a method and system for recommending tags for a resource.

The system includes a similarity engine. The similarity engine compares relevant content segments of the resource with relevant resources stored in disparate systems. Based on the comparison, the system presents tags recommendation to the user.

In accordance with the method and system, a resource for which a tag recommendation is desired by a user is identified. Thereafter, the system retrieves relevant content segments of the resource. For example, as shown in fig.1 for a resource which is a webpage, relevant content segments such as text, picture and video are retrieved from the webpage.

Subsequently, the relevant content segments are feed to the similarity engine. The similarity engine determines characteristics information for each content segment. The characteristic information is used to compare the relevant content segments with other resources present in the disparate systems. For example, for photos, the similarity engine compares the resources present in pictures hosting websites, similarly for videos, the resources present in videos hosting websites are used for comparison. In an embodiment, the user could specify specific systems to be interrogated where the user could optionally pass authentication credential for the system with the request.
