Method and System for Displaying Sponsored Search Results along with Web Search Results in a Graphical Manner

Abstract

A method and system for displaying sponsored search results along with web search results in a graphical manner is disclosed.  The sponsored search results are dynamically integrated with web search results.  Thereafter, search keywords used by a user are mapped with appropriate coloring of sponsored search results thereby providing an overall projection of the search results to the user in the graphical manner.

Description

Disclosed is a method and system for displaying sponsored search results along with web search results in a graphical manner.  Typically, a search engine, such as Yahoo!* search engine, receives search keywords from a user.  In response, the search engine performs a search and fetches web search results.  Thereafter, the search engine dynamically integrates web search results with sponsored search results as overall search results.  The overall search results are then organized into nodes or branches of a tree and are displayed to the user in the graphical manner as an interactive tree diagram.  This graphical representation of the overall search results helps the user in quickly browsing the overall search results, as the user is not required to go through a list of overall search results displayed as links in a traditional manner.

The interactive tree diagram of the overall search results include a link per node.  Further, depending on a type of the link, a different visual symbol in the form of a block having specific shape is displayed for each node.  In addition to using different visual symbol for each node, different colors are used for depicting different symbols thereby differentiating the displayed overall search results.  This methodology also helps in categorizing similar search results for representing more details of the link or the expansion of the link.  Moreover, the interactive tree diagram displays connections between nodes depicting the relationship between the overall search results.  For example, a link of a node may be colored red for depicting a hot topic and a hot trend.  Similarly, a link of a node may be colored blue for depicting that the link leads to a sales website.  A yellow colored link may depict a transitional link.  Likewise, for blocks, a node depicted as a circle may depict a final term, i.e. expansion of the node is not possible as it is a final term.  In the similar fashion, a node depicted as a rectangular shaped box with smooth corners depicts expansion term.  If a node, shaped as a rectangular shaped box with smooth corners, has a link which is colored blue, then the link depicts that the clicking the node will lead to a sales website.

Additionally, the interactive tree diagram of the overall search results helps in displaying more information pertaining to search results such as, search results that are sponsored, most popular, latest, trending...
