DESCRIPTION

Figure 1 below shows a vertical aftercooler for cooling feed air to a vacuum pressure swing adsorption (VPSA) process. It comprises a housing, coil, polyethylene strips, couplings and insulation. The vertical design as shown meets typical requirements for the coil insertion, coil retention and void volume while still addressing the cyclic service, shell discontinuities, tensile strength and coolant nozzle flexibility.

The housing or shell consists of the main vessel and the top dished head which are bolted together by body flanges. The housing typically contains baffles and guides. The baffles are located at the top, positioned horizontally, and provide rigidity to the assembly and prevent air from by-passing the coil. Strategically located "stays" may be welded between the baffle plates to prevent a resonant frequency from occurring. The guides are positioned vertically between the baffles and across the bottom plate.

The coil, or core, is an extended surface coil using metal, such as aluminum, fins and either stainless steel or steel tubes (depending on site specified coolant). The coils are slightly modified for vertical service, e.g. the lower "pan" is added and "side plates" inserted into the pan for additional strength. The coolant manifold is shortened and trimmed to a generally square edge butt joint for ease of installation of the couplings. Preferably, there is a lifting bar located between the coolant manifold headers to provide single point lifting ability.

The coil is installed vertically within the housing and secured by means of friction- fit of polyethylene strips against the housing baffles. Conventional aftercoolers are orientated horizontally, meaning, the coils are inserted and operated horizontally. The insertion process is difficult and tedious, often requiring an overhead crane, a fork truck and four or more people for insertion. The vertical design utilizes gravity. The coil is lowered in from above using an overhead crane. Typically, only two people are required to load a vertical coil. Once inserted, the only connection required are the two couplings that tie-into the coolant connections.
