Abstract

Disclosed is a functional extension of spreadsheet applications such that a user has the ability to, in one action, specify hyperlinks for a group of cells in a column or row having similar content. The method is called Group Hyperlink Definition and can be used to create a hyperlink that is persisted or can be used on a real-time basis to formulate a URL as needed.

Group Hyperlink Definition in Spreadsheets

In many applications, including spreadsheets, an entry in a row can be defined as a hyperlink to another resource.

The limitation of this functionality is that current spreadsheet applications require the user to manually define each individual hyperlink and perform multiple steps to do so.

This article is directed to extending spreadsheet functionality to allow a user to specify hyperlinks for a group of cells with similar content in one user action. Moreover, the definition is not denoted to a particular URL, but the user may instead define a web application, and the information in the cells is individually determined via the web application. This is called group hyperlink definition. This information can be used to create a hyperlink that is persisted, or can be used on a real-time basis to formulate a URL as needed. This is in contrast to the current approach that requires a user to define a URL for each hyperlink definition action manually, and to persist said hyperlinks.

Other cases also apply, for example, the column could be text-based and the relevant application could be a dictionary web application where the URLs would be to definitions of the words.

The user begins by creating a spreadsheet. Then, the process for implementing this group hyperlink definition follows:

1. The user selects a column or row (in this example, Column A).

2. Instead of individually defining a hyperlink for each cell in the column or r...
