Method to improve Instant Messaging (IM) chat interface to allow for hot edits of already entered text with edit history

Chat interface is a widely used method of exchanging information in real time between two or more participants in a single session. However, current IM clients do not allow for the real-time editing of already entered text. This results in chat transcripts which are full of typos, logic errors, followed by attempts to clarify previously entered text. In totality, all these extra artifacts don't do much to make the chat transcript more readable or the content more correct. With this method, a set of features are envisioned, which would allow the user to make updates to the

previously entered chat content preserving the history of such updates. In the end, this should

provide for a much cleaner transcript and facilitate a better online collaboration experience

between chat participants.

Additions to IM application's user interface are proposed, which will allow a user participating in the chat session to "hot edit" his or her already entered text by selecting (

pointing the cursor and

left-clicking or pressing enter) and typing directly over the previously entered text.

The edited text locations are represented by symbols being placed near the edited section and immediately visible to all chat participants. On mouse-over event, any user is able to view the edit details (old text, new text , timestamp, editor) in a special pop-up window :
