Introduction & background
Storage manufacturers continually strive to minimise the number and type of field replaceable units (FRUs) that they use. In particular, there is a desire to keep the number of disk drive carriers to a minimum, and if possible, just to one type. This saves on manufacturing costs, and can ensure that a customer can buy a single part that could fit in any of their enclosures.
This desire means that the disk drive carrier is used in a number of enclosures, and in ways that it was not originally designed for. Most disk drive carriers are created for front loading enclosures, so that their airflow is front to back, as shown in figures 1 & 2.
However, with the ever-increasing trend for density, carriers are also required to work in other orientations, such as a drawer configuration as shown in figures 3 & 4. This example uses a carrier dedicated for the purpose, but as described above, a single common carrier has its advantages.
Rotating the drive carrier for vertical insertion is a simple mechanical change. However, it also changes the direction of airflow across the disk drive. With a dense enclosure, airflow needs to be carefully managed to ensure that the air moves where it is required, and does not leak or bypass areas where cooling is required.
Since the drive carriers are designed for front-to-back airflow, the air holes in the front of the carrier actually become a problem with the rotated carrier, providing a leak path for airflow from the top, as shown in figures 5 & 6.
Description of the invention
This invention seeks to avoid this airflow leak path, whilst still allowing the same FRU to be used across the product range. This is achieved via an Airflow Control Device. The device is a low-cost moulded item which could have different forms depending on the carrier being used, but effectively blocks the majority of the airflow from the front of the carrier. Airflow in drive carriers is normally from the front through the handle and over the drive. Airflow outside of the carrier front is undesirable since it can impede the EMI sealing of the carrier.
