A software component is designed and implemented which enables HMC GUI developers to write guided service applications as if the GUI panels are displayed on local machine while in fact the GUI panels are displayed on other PCs over network. This has allowed much efficient development team work and easier product technology transition.

Problem/Background:


One of the function of Squadron S Hardware management Console (HMC) is that it can be controlled over internet using another PC. There are many technologies that can be used to connect the client PC with HMC server and these technologies are constantly evolving. Currently, an IBM WebSM client program has to be installed on the client PC which is to be used to connect to HMC. WebSM provides a primary graphical user interface (GUI) for the user on client PCs. Under WebSM, two client server communication models exist each taking part of the responsibility of transferring client requests to HMC and HMC response to the client. This client server communication model is very likely to change in the next product with new innovations in internet technology. Because the majority of management functionalities on HMC are closely tied to the GUI, potentially, any change in client server communication technology which supports GUI on client PC will affect the rest of the HMC code. This is highly undesirable from product migration and maintenance point of view. It is therefore desirable to decouple the software module which controls the client server communication between HMC and client PC with the rest of the HMC code.
