Method and System for Matching User Declared Interests to Advertisements on a Social network

Abstract

A method and system for matching user declared interests to advertisements on a social network is disclosed.  The method includes displaying the advertisements along with the user declared interests when a match is detected between the user declared interests and the advertisements.

Description

Disclosed is a method and system for matching user declared interests to advertisements.

Typically, users perform various activities on social networking sites, online forums and webpages to declare their interests.  Examples of such activities include writing a review, updating profile information, describing their likes and dislikes, posting questions and answers, writing articles and blogs and uploading pictures.  It is possible to determine a user’s interests based on such activities.  Further, such activities performed by the users are accessible to their contacts and friends on the social networking sites.  For example, a review written by a user about a particular brand may be read by the user’s contacts and friends on the social networking sites.  In the same manner when a user likes or dislikes a service or a product, the information is made accessible to the user’s contacts and friends.

Thereafter, access rights associated with a user profile of each of the identified users is determined.  The access rights determine an amount of information associated with the user profile that the user wishes to share with public, friends, and contacts.  If the user has given the permission to share his declared interests with the public, contacts, and friends, then the advertisement is displayed along with the user information pertaining to the declared interests next to the advertisement.  In a scenario, where more than one user is identified who have user declared interests that match the advertisements, a group of such users may be formed.  Thereafter, the advertisement may be displayed along with the group information.

In an instance, the advertisement may be displayed along with the number of users...
