Method and System for using a Protective Cap with Giant Magnetoresistive (GMR) Head and Cable Assembly

Disclosed is a method and system for using a protective cap with a giant magnetoresistive (GMR) head and cable assembly. The protective cap covers or plugs into a GMR head and a cable at a point where the GMR head and the cable connect to a control card. The protective cap fits against a connector of the cable like a "shoe". Further, the protective cap contacts a connector housing lead which is connected to a GMR element on the GMR head module. Material of the protective cap is selected such that, static dissipative characteristics of the material enables effective dissipation of charge before damaging the GMR elements. In addition, the material enables preparation of the protective cap which is light in weight and compact in size.

The protective cap enables reduction in damages due to electrostatic discharge (ESD) at the GMR head module by covering and closing the connector housing leads. Further, usage of the protective cap is cost effective as the protective cap can be recycled and reused over a new GMR head and cable assembly.
