Disclosed is a method and system for performing simultaneous Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) backups for Scale-Out Network Attached Storage (SONAS) appliance across multiple interface nodes of SONAS.

In accordance with the method disclosed herein, an NDMP daemon is associated with each interface node which is configured to perform NDMP backups. An NDMP daemon associated with an interface node manages an NDMP backup request for the interface node. Accordingly, multiple interface nodes perform multiple NDMP backups simultaneously using corresponding NDMP daemons. This facilitates a customer to scale-up their backup capability. A customer may reduce an overall time required for backing-up SONAS filesystems by employing multiple interface nodes to simultaneously perform the NDMP backups.

In order to perform NDMP backups, one or more interface nodes are grouped and a set of the one or more interface nodes is created. The set of the one or more interface nodes may be called as NDMP

_GROUP. The grouping of the one or more

interface nodes is performed such that IP addresses that can be assigned to a specific network port will be associated for NDMP services. Additionally, the NDMP services running on an interface node provide for both data and control connections to machines external to the SONAS appliance.

Thereafter, NDMP parameters are configured for the NDMP

GROUP. The

NDMP parameters are stored and retrieved via SONAS Command Line Interface (CLI) commands. The SONAS CLI commands run from a management server that stores these values in Samba Registry. In addition to SONAS CLI commands for storing and retrieving NDMP parameters, a set of CLI commands are also provided to interact directly with the software vendor supplied NDMP CLI commands. This additional set of CLI commands facilitate viewing of session information and stopping currently running NDMP sessions.

In an embodiment, a two-way configuration is used to configure NDMP parameters for a SONAS appliance as illustrated in Fig. 1. In a two-way configuration, a user utilizes SONAS CLI to configure NDMP parameters for the SONAS appliance. An external Data Management Application (DMA) is also controlled to receive data from the SONAS system. Thereafter, this received data is written to directly attached fiber channel tape drives, disk drives or other storage directly attached to the DMA.
