Abstract

This invention is a hermetic feedthrough with an electropolished pin for improved pin fatigue life. Feedthrough pins are normally made from drawn or machined wire. The surface finish of the wire is relatively poor due to draw lines or machining damage. Poor surface finish can reduce fatigue life because the flaws on the surface can act as crack initiation sites. Electropolishing is used to improve the surface finish and fatigue life of bare metal stents, but the technology has not been used for hermetic feedthrough pins. Improved pin fatigue life is desirable for several reasons. Field returns with broken feedthrough pins due to mechanical fatigue have been observed, and future feedthrough applications may demand higher pin fatigue life
