Retractable Head for Tape Drive Configured to Store Multiple Format Media Content

Disclosed are retractable heads for a tape drive configured to store multiple format media content.

For a tape drive, it is often desirable to be able to read and sometimes write media content associated with multiple formats including format of previous generations. In accordance with a design disclosed herein, latest generation head and previous generation head (legacy head) are designed on separate modules. This reduces complexity of combining multiple formats onto one wafer design.

Under normal operation with latest generation media, the legacy head is retracted from tape engagement as shown in fig. 1

However, once previous generations' media is detected by cartridge memory reader, the legacy head moves into position to read/write the media while lifting the latest generation head away from the media as shown in fig. 2. This way, the latest generation head is not affected by rougher previous generation format.
