Abstract

Disclosed is a application group system (AGS) that leverages tagging technology to group existing applications and/or files on user's computer environment. According to a user defined tag, this system can group up the applications and execute commands on all applications of the same group. This system also make it easy to switch between different groups of applications.

Application Grouping System using Tagging Technology

1. Background: Computer users sometimes need many applications and files to achieve a task. Even for a single task, users might use different applications and different set of files for different purposes. For example, when people work at office, they need software that performing office tasks (email application, document editor application, etc) to work on emails or documents. When they go back home, they might need some entertainment related applications ( audio/video player, etc) to play their mp3 or video clips. Users tend to open same group of applications and files for the same purpose. These actions are redundant and repeated when user works on routine task daily. Furthermore, during our work, user might want to switch to another group of applications temporarily and switch back to the original working applications. The closing and opening between applications and documents are annoying.

The functionality which allows user to define custom group members of software applications and files can really help computer users to work easier.

Existing grouping applications only solve this problem partially. These existing application won't be able to easily add/remove an application from a group or execute a command to the entire group of applications.

Drawbacks of Present Art :

1a. Launch file/application one by one manually is most time-comsuming way. 1b. Set start-up application when booting the OS. However, user can't define custom member applications for different purpose. This function can only lauch applications at start-up. You can't perform other commands (close, minimize, etc) on this group.

1c. Some exisiting grouping applications let user to define a custom group of applications but those grouping applications didn't provide an easy way for user to add or remove an application from a group.

1d. Most grouping appllications can only applied to software applications and not documents or files. It will be helpful if we can open those related files all together, too.

Proposed Application Group System (AGS) by using tagging technology allows user to define custom group members of software applications and files can really help computer users to work easier.
2. Description of Invention:
(i) The core of this invention is an Application Group System (AGS) that leverages tagging technology to enable grouping of existing applications and/or files on user's computer environment. Users can define their own custom group by giving the same tag on application and/or files. There will be a software agent to perform actions and store all necessary information. When user wants to work with one group of application and documents, the agent will open everything that are defined with the tag for this particular group. In the same way, user can execute commands on the group of resources, for example, minimize or maximize all the application. Therefore, switching between different groups of ap...
