Abstract

The document discloses a method for determining the state of residual stress in an axle that has been hardened. A part of the axle is cut and used as a test specimen. Strain gauges are attached to the outer surface of the specimen. A through-hole is then drilled in the axial direction of the test specimen and the strains on the surface are measured during the drilling. Subsequently larger drills are used until the measured strains are irrelevant. By the skillful use of continuum mechanics the state of residual stress for the whole axle can be determined. It is thus possible to calculate the residual stress from a hardening process in an axle, by measuring the strains on the outside of a part of an axle being bored through with drills of increasing diameter.
