System and Method for differentiated text formatting for users in group IM chats

In the area of electronic communication through email, instant messaging (IM), and social or organizational chat rooms, the format of the text chosen by the sender may need to be modified to meet the needs of the recipient or to place emphasis on the message (or sections of the message). To this end, the following examples of possible user needs are defined:

• To automatically change formatting for a certain section of the text (e.g., bold, highlight) in an IM or other chat stream for viewing by managers in the organization

• To automatically generate a format for close friends in a social network

• To explicitly define individuals for whom one would like to change the formatting of text

• To automatically apply formatting based on a user's profile set up in the organizational or social messaging network. This is especially helpful in cases where the recipient is visually impaired; the text is formatted (e.g., color, size) to better enable them to read the message. This profile may be created by the sender, the recipient, or a third party. Additionally, this formatting profile may be based on accessibility/disability requirements and may reside locally or on a centralized system.

• To associate different user-defined formatting profiles for interactions with groups and other specified individuals

In existing messaging systems, there is currently no method in place that allows differential text formatting based on organizational graph and/or social graph awareness and user/recipient profiles. Prior art searches produced no known relevant solutions to this problem.

The disclosed solution is a method for differential handling of text formatting based on organizational and social graph awareness and profiles in messaging systems. The solution allows certain recipients to view the text in customized formats according to their organizational level, social network, or other specified criteria. This is advantageous because communication becomes differentiated, therefore more relevant, to the recipients

The invention works as follows, the user:

1. Selects this functionality in a profile or preferences. The user may create several profiles and associate them with different types of communication and with different entities (e.g., e-mail, 1-2-1 communication, group chat, etc.). These
