Method and System for Detecting Click Frauds

Abstract

A method and system is disclosed for detecting click fraud such as, an Ad click fraud initiated by rogue publishers or bad hosts.

Description

Disclosed is a method and system for detecting Ad click fraud initiated by rogue publishers or bad hosts.  Upon detecting the Ad click fraud, it is identified whether the Ad click fraud is initiated by a rogue publisher or by a bad host.  In response to the identification, a list of the rogue publishers and the bad hosts may be maintained by categorizing the Ad click frauds based on the origin of the Ad click fraud.

In order to detect click frauds, the method and system disclosed herein differentiate between the clicks generated by an I/O device, such as, a mouse or a keyboard; and the clicks generated by programmatic constructs.  The programmatic constructs may be used by robots/bots running on the origin of the click frauds.  Examples of the programmatic constructs may include, but is not limited to, a JavaScript, an ActionScript, a VBScript and other related web scripts.  The differentiation between the clicks is identified by analyzing the clicks.  The analysis of clicks may be performed by monitoring the incoming clicks to figure out a pattern from a subnet or a client machine that generates clicks in volumes.  In an embodiment, if the volume of clicks crosses a predefined threshold for a specific subnet or client machine, the pattern of clicks may be analyzed.  The threshold may be defined based on past history of fraud reports and occurrences that were recorded.
