TITLE: Drillable and embedded packer element extrusion limiter system

ABSTRACT:

This publication describes a system that assists the sealing ability of a down-hole drillable packer in wellbore casing, enabling the packer to seal off and isolate zones. This system uses a metallic or non-metallic spring-like coil embedded in the packer element to work as an effective extrusion limiter. All this is designed for effective operation and ease of drill ability.

    This system is comprised of a rubber based packer element(s) enabled with an embedded extrusion limiter which allows a drillable packer to seal off in wellbore casing.

It is important to note that the limiters expand out and contact the casing (see figure 4) when the packer elements are compressed and squeezed out. This system is placed onto some form of down- hole drillable packer designed to isolate well bore fluids and or pressures.

    The included figures 1 and 2 are examples of the invention also simply known as a Drillable and embedded packer element extrusion limiter system.

    The embedded (or extrusion limiter) portion of this system is fabricated into the packer element such that it is an integral part of the element. This part of the system is a spring or merely expandable in nature allowing expansion to a larger diameter and does not need to return to its original diameter. Since it is drillable, it is made out of a material that a drill bit or milling head can drill out in a competitive time and or manner. Material for extrusion limiter can include but is not limited to a glass\resin composite, phenolic, PEAK, different rubber compounds, brass, aluminum, plastics, Teflon® or any variant or combination thereof. The process for implanting the extrusion limiter can be molded, co-molded, glued, fastened or melted on/into the rubber element.
