Current technologies address the problem of call-collision through re-routing calls to voice mail, providing call signals, utilizing multiple lines, among others. No solutions handle calls occurring simultaneously between two callers with the same approach as the disclosed invention.

In an example of a preferred embodiment:
1. Time T0 - Alice is talking to Bob when the call disconnects. Both are on software-capable phones. Alice's phone number is 555-1111 and Bob's is 555-1112.

2. Time T1 - Alice tries to reconnect within 15 seconds of the previous call ending. Her phone software recognizes that her phone number is lower than Bob's, so it tries to connect right away.

3. Time T1 - At approximately the same time, Bob tries to reconnect (still within 15 seconds of the previous call ending). His phone software recognizes that his phone number is higher than Alice's so his phone waits five seconds (for collision avoidance) before actually trying to connect with Alice in case she is trying to call right back.

4. Time T2 - Alice's call comes through to Bob's phone before Bob's collision avoidance period has expired, thus no collision.

The process of the invention follows:
1. Call between A and B is disconnected
2. Call reconnect period starts
3. Static time period (e.g., 15 seconds)
4. Variable time, manually set by user, or set dynamically
• based on current network congestion
• based on called party
5. One of the parties initiates a reconnect; could be optional
• user holds down 'talk' key to indicate that this is a reconnect attempt and thus would like collision avoidance activated
• phone recognizes call within reconnect period, and prompts user whether to use collision avoidance
6. Call collision avoidance process is initiated
