Abstract

In this disclosure, we proposed a scroll bar with web page element indicators. The relative positions of certain kinds of HTML elements can be displayed as small indicators in the scrollbar. With this kind of scrollbars, users can locate and perform actions on the page elements that they are interested in (such as pictures, videos, etc) very easily.

Disclosed is an user interface widget to improve the user experience of web browsing. When users surfing the internet, the main behavior is reading HyperText Markup Language (HTML) pages using web browsers. The web browsers could display HTML tag stream as a human friendly way. Further more, the HTML tags could be explained as an Document Object Model (DOM) tree, which is a more structural way of information.-

But the way information constructed may not perfectly fit with the way user want to browse. For example, user may only want to browse all the pictures in a web page ( this is pretty possible when user is browsing photos shared by another one in a forum). Of course, special aimed website may optimize the pages to provide better photo browsing experience, but it is not a common case for any web page. An alternative solution is using the Find function of web browser. But currently only text is findable, not for other multimedia elements.

This invention provides a new way to help user browse HTML pages by certain types of media elements, thus provide user another way to browse a web page.

The core idea of this invention is to introduce a method for the improvement of the user experience when finding and browsing certain type of media element on web pages.-Web pages will be parsed to get the DOM structure.- Certain kinds of media elements will be analyzed and located in the DOM structure. Then indicators of various kinds of media elements will be generated and displayed according to the position they appear in the current web page.-These indicators may be displayed on the scroll bar or beside the the scroll bar as users like.

With this invention, users can get a much more efficient way to browse web pages and find the information they need. Users can preview and browse certain type of media element in the web page easily by moving the mouse over or clicking the indicators on

There are two possible embodiments of this invention. One is implementing this invention as a built -in module of a web browser, for example, Firefox*. The other is implementing it as a web browser plugin.

No matter in which embodiment, the basic algorithm is similar. When a web page is loaded into a web browser, it will be transformed into a DOM tree. Each web page element is a node on the DOM tree. For example, picture is a element in HTML page. And in the corresponding DOM tree, it's an IMAGE node. Here IMAGE node is used to illustrate the basic algorithm and the web browser embodiment is used. After browser loading a web page and getting its DOM tree. It parses the tree.
