Abstract

Disclosed is a new a method that leverages a service management model for a multi-vendor IT environment. This model is called the Services Integration Management Model (SIMM). It is a seven step model that provides a more efficient method to create a services-driven solution for a customer that wishes to implement a Service Integration environment.

Service Integration (SI) is a model and a framework that provides organizations the ability to drive significant cost reductions, achieve integration of process and enable delivery of service on an enterprise wide scale. It provides the organization with a consistent and responsive infrastructure that supports overall strategy and business objectives set for the organization. SI provides the foundation and basis for not only an alignment between IT and the business but also provides the methodology to weave IT into the core of an organization.

Today, there is a lack of a well-understood and accepted approach to design and implement a services management model for a multi-vendor IT environment. Most IT organizations manage and operate their business by partnering with multiple product and service providers. The more providers supporting their portfolio of services, the more complex the job of managing them becomes. Designing and implementing a model and enabling a system to manage this complexity are complex in themselves.

IT organizations are implementing "General Contractor" models to better manage the complexity of delivering services in a multi-vendor IT environment. However, each implementation seems to be a custom or "one-off" solution. Research did not discover a standard method to design and implement these models; thus, a seven step approach has been developed to meet the need of IT organizations.

Most General Contractor models in place aggregate information from providers. This serves to measure performance against contractual commitments, but does not enable continual improvement of IT services being delivered. Missing in the General Contractor approach is the integration of process and technology that enable continual service improvement. So whereas organizations design and implement General Contractor IT service models, no known system and method exists to design and implement an integrated multi-vendor IT model.

The key piece of novelty in this invention is the unique method to map from the requirements of a services business to components necessary to implement a Services Integration environment. This includes a new method to list and categorize services (known as the "Services Cube"). This mapping from the business to capabilities is performed through seven steps described in detail in section 2.

The Service Integration Management Model (SIMM) is defined as seven key steps. Following are the details for each of the seven steps of the SIMM.
