Abstract

The configuration of solid state motor starters bases, for example, on the rated current, the rated torque or the rated speed of the connected motor. These values are parameterized either via the mounted operator panel or by using a particular application, running on a computer. Subsequently the parameters are stored in an internal memory of the solid state starter. For the configuration, parameterization and runtime control the solid state starter supports different communication protocols, as Serial, Profibus, Profinet, Industrial Ethernet and AS-i (Actuator-Sensor-interface). A failure of the motor starter device results in loss of all parameter values set for the particular motor. This leads to machine downtime and results in stopping or tripping more equipment at upstream and downstream. Because of using two different devices for changing the settings, there is the possibility of having different settings at the starter and the application running on a computer. On this account, up to now, the configurations or parameterizations done at the operator panel are equalized with the application running on the computer by uploading functions. The uploaded data is stored by the application as a file. However, with the failure of the starter device the communication channel also fails. Thus, the last valid configuration or parameterization data is lost and cannot be retrieved by the application.
