Abstract

Document Finishing Architecture (DFA) is a set of published specifications that allow finisher vendors to develop in-line devices that are compatible with compliant printing equipment. This idea proposes an addition to the Document Finishing Architecture (DFA) protocol which would enable third party finishing devices to provide a signal which would request the marking engine to dead cycle (or pause) while the finisher performs some internal task such as setting wire depth, performing a calibration, or having an operator remove a jam. The printing device dead cycle means no paper will be fed to the Finishing device while the dead cycle or pause is in process. Currently the third party device can only declare a fault which then the marking engine performs a complete cycle down. The signal amounts to a request for a "pause" in the printing. The idea also proposes a similar request for a "purge current sheets in flight and then dead cycle" to the marking engine from the DFA device.
